Need to convert a .swf flash file to an animated GIF to play across all devices. Here are 2 ways to do this
Convert a SWF to GIF
Well you can import the .swf into Flash and export as an animated gif.
Import the .swf
Export to Animated GIF – set the the Target Player to Flash Player 5
Once you have done this check the results and see what the gif is like, you may have to toggle a few color options in the output to get a better result.
However sometimes this method just doesn’t cut it, the type looks jaggy and the colors just look awful – png sequence to the rescue!
Convert a SWF to GIF via PNG Sequence exported from Photoshop
Import the SWF the same way into Flash as above, but this time use the File -> Export Movie menu, choose PNG and export –
Make Format PNG Sequence
Defaults should be OK
After that you should get a folder with a bunch of PNGs – now we have to bring this into Photoshop to export as an animated GIF, in Photoshop go to file open and click on the first png in the folder they were output to…
Click on the first png and’Image Sequence’ and then open. Select the Frame Rate
Now you need to choose your frames per second setting, I find that the lower the setting the smoother and more fluid the playback which is fine and also the lower the file size, double bonus, you can experiment with this but 12.5fps seems pretty good.
Okay now lucky last – File Save for Web…
Set your GIF settings and your all done
The Save for Web dialog box has many options and you may need to toggle a few for your own purpose, the key things are the GIF format itself, set the Animation to Forever. Other than those you will need to make calls on transparency and colors.
