Google Analytics Hiding the Data – (not set) (not provided) (content targeted)

September 29, 2012 Leave a Comment

Starting to see less and less in the numbers as provided by Google Analytics of your website traffic… looking at the stats in Traffic Sources > Overview in the keywords list we have:

google-analytics-not-set-provided-content-targetting

  • (not provided)
  • (content targettted)
  • (not set)

What are they?

(not provided)

The (not provided) figure will typically be one of the highest in your keyword list, these are the keywords combined in a summary count that are searched by by logged in Google users over secure HTTPS connections. Users that are logged into their Google account and search for stuff – this accounts for so many searches as browsers will keep the user logged in, offer account log in autocompletion and with so many on gmail accounts a lot of searches are done by logged in users.

(content targetted)

The (content targetted) figure is a summary count of users who clicked on an advert from the Google Display Network that referred them to your website. This will show when you look at figures which include paid sources.

(not set)

The (not set) figure is an odd one! there are a few reasons why it may happen – what it essentially means is that no actual keyword phrase referred the user to your site? Again this only shows when you look at figures which including direct, referral and paid sources but not if you specifically look at Traffic Sources > Sources > Search > Organic

But how would Google know I queried. Well the main reasons seem to be:

  • AdWords campaign may not be configured correctly (most likely)
  • Google GA Code is place above the Title Meta Tag in the header of a page
  • Tracking virtual pages
  • Tracking flash style elements within virtual pages
